I just went to court for the first time on a stop light charge a few weeks ago. In my state at least your first court date isn't an actual trial. You get to talk to the DA and then make your plea. Should you plead innocent your trial will be set for another date, but this isn't typically a good idea. I'm not sure what you are charged with, but while I was there the DA was pretty good about reducing people's speeds. They'll ask you what you want to do, just ask if they could possibly reduce the charge so that it does not reflect so unfavorably on your record. Feel free to point out your currently spotless record. They will probably reduce the charges failry substantially and you just plead guilt to it in front of the jugde when your name is called. Try to get it to 10 over and it won't raise your insurance. Many states also have what is called a PJC (plea for judgement continued.) This means you plead guilty to the charge but it does not go on your record and you pay only court costs. However, if you are found guilt of a similar offense within three years the old one can come back to haunt you. You can only get a PJC once every 3 years or so. Unless you have a really terrible record you should have no problem getting one. Hopefully, the DA will reduce your speed and give you a PJC and you'll avoid an insurance hike altogether. Oh, and SHOW UP EARLY, say 15 minutes before your actual date. In my experience at least, those who showed up eary got through with it much sooner.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Craig
