the offending part is a darlington transistor, installed in the ACC unit behind the false bulkhead. Replace it with SD1525 (toshiba) or SD1559 (hitachi). I could only find the hitachi one, and a cross-referenced number from the electronics supply place was ACG2541. Avoid calling radio shack for this one unless your ulcer needs a little stimulation. I'm told you just solder in the new one.
However, I'm having trouble getting to the old transistor. It sounds as if, on some models and perhaps yours you can hope, if you remove the plastic cover behind the false bulkhead under the hood (several 8 mm bolts), you'll see the ACC unit on the passenger side. Move towards the driver's side and there will be a 4x5 inch rectangular panel, held in place by four screws. Remove this and this will reveal the transistor. There should be a heat sink with cooling fins to guide you to the right place.
On my '88 9kt, I'm getting a sinking feeling that this access panel is inaccessible, below the A/C dryer, and the only way I'll get to it is to either cut my way through the false bulkhead or remove the entire ACC unit. :-(
Please let me know what you see when you open up your ACC. thanks.
