I switched to Delco Duragaurd Gold filters based on their website propaganda, which seemed credible. The other day I received a Nines magazine which had a very flattering report on these filters, comparing them to other premium offerings, which only bolstered my already high opinion of them. Considering their performance and the prevaling competition, they are reasonably priced at about $8, but are hard to find. Pep Boys carries them.
And as for oil, use synthetic, but the viscosity depends on where you live.
If you change to synthetic from long-term fossil oil use, it would be advisable to change two or three times at about 3k miles to clean the sludge left from the engine's exposure to fossil oil. After that, 10k intervals are usually acceptable, perhaps 15k if you do mostly highway driving with few short trips.
The brand? Mobil 1 is ubiquitous, making it a good choice since it is also of excellent quality. Royal Purple, better in wear protection and oxidation resistence in tests I've seen, is harder to find but usually available at Napa dealers. Oiltown.com sells it at great discounts via mail order in case quantities. Amsoil is excellent, but marketing is similar to the Amway stategy, an apparent pyramid arrangement to encourage users to become distributors over the internet or as neighborhood dealers. There is no established, mainstream marketing philosophy in force that I can discern, but my research reveals that it is an excellent product. Claims by salemen of 25k change intervals are unfounded, IMHO.
