"what exactly do the replacement chip guys do?" This is next to
impossible to answer as none of the aftermarket people seem to willing
to divulge this. By the way, this sort of question probably should
be directed to the "Performance" BB. But anyway, it seems to me that
all the engine parameters you listed (boost pressure, A/F ratio, timing,
etc.) should be addressed by the 'tuners'. However, I'm not sure they
all do this. For example, Abbott. Why do they use a different wastegate?
And why don't they retain the stock base boost? Raising the base will
lower the threshold by which a well-designed APC will function. I have
a suspicion that the engineers that designed the APC knew what they were
doing. I also have a suspicion that other than raising the fuel cut-off,
Abbott hasn't done any software 'tuning' relative to the important parameters you mentioned. If they have, why wont they say anything about
their Trionic modifications, other than one needs a new wastegate
and the base boost has been raised? The Trionic is a pretty sophisticated
piece of engine management. I would rather have it, rather than the MAP
sensor, controlling a dangerous issue like predetonation on a turbo.
There are some Swedish tuners, for example Maptun, that do retain all the
APC parameters, and will keep the 'tranny friendly' boost limits in 1st
and second gears. I think the Swiss firm, Hirsch, does so, also.
Finally, I wouldn't go fiddling around with sensors. The T5 Trionic is
very 'tunable' and with a knowledgeable tuner can be made to adapt to all
the conditions you're concerned with.
