Low Speed Fan failure - a different idea

I am not sure what terminal #87 does, but I assume that it is on the main current side of the relay, i.e. the low speed fan side.
My low speed fan didn't work, and by looking at the car's invoices It hadn't worked for the previous 2 owners. I went down the 'change the radiator temperature switch' route without success (now I have a spare). The problem was eventually traced to a damaged loom that runs under the radiator (apparently around the '92 MY there were a number of looms that were streched when they were installed). This had led to a break in the wiring hence no low speed fan (or time delay fan on engine switch off when hot).
In your case could a streched loom caused a break in the wiring and a short to earth (i.e. touching any metal surface). So when your temperature rises the radiator temperature switch (thermistor) senses that it is above the threshold temperature, energises the relay, which sends current to the low speed fan circuit which has an earth on it. Result no low speed fan and high current drawn through the relay (hence the sorching). Your high speed fan would work because this is a separate circuit that goes directly to the fan and not through the 'big gold' resistor.
So check the low speed fan circuit for an earth.
