After replacing the rear pads, you'll find that the hand brake is loose. Simply keep pulling it and release until the hand brake start grabbing the disc. It is fool proof.
You'll probably have some difficulty compressing the piston on the rear caliper, like I did, if you never come across this type of design. There is a cap bolt on the caliper. Once removed, you need to use a 4mm allen wrench to back out a threaded rod. Only after that is done can the piston be compressed to install the new pad.
The self-adjustment of the hand brake works by every pull of the brake lever. It turns the threaded rod to advance it and squeeze the brake piston.
