you can only lose oil 3 ways:
a. Burn it - With that amount it should be obvious from the colour of the exhaust and the back of the car with have oily spots over it. (Piston rings, valve stem seals etc).
b. Leaking - You should be able to see the leaks on the ground. If there is too much oil in the engine bay/on the engine block steam clean the engine and watch where it appears. Get the seals/gaskets replaced as appropriate.
c. Leaking into the cooling system - you can see it/smell it in the coolant.
The leak should be faily obvious. My wife's 900S 16V has a faily oily engine block at 197,000 miles but I have only had to top up the oil between services once in 5 years.
