I ran three sets of 205-55ZR-16's (stock Aero size) on my '91 9KT 5-door; i.e., all replacements after the original set of Pirellis. I had no problems at all with tire clearance, though going to this size will cause your speedometer to read 3% slower than before. I.e., if you were showing 60 mph with the 50-series tires, you would indicate 58-59 mph with the 55's.

This would all be good if your speedo is optimistic like some are, but my
'91 was right on the money to begin with, so I lived with a small error for the duration of my ownership. The 205-55-16 size is more commonly represented that the 50's, though now this isn't as flagrant a problem as it was in the early 90's. At that time about the only tire available in this size was the P700Z, yet 55's were prevalent.

Of course, my Aero's stock size is the 55-series while its speedometer 6% fast, so it would be counter-productive going to 50-series with this car from the standpoint of the speedometer error, even if there was a good reason to do so. If anything, I need to go larger to correct this errant speedometer--but room in the 9K wheel well is scarce, and going larger than 215 is risky because of clearance. Some have stuffed 225-50-16's under the wells and reported no clearance problems, but others haven't fared so well. The Tire Rack doesn't recommend going larger than 215 on the 9K, though their recommendations are conservative by their own admission. One other note: The SZ-50's are not as wide as most in a given size range, so the changes of going larger with these would be better than most.

On my '91 I installed Dunlop SP-8000, SP-4000, and finally the SZ-50's--all 55's and all without problems. If I still had my '91, my feeling would be that the performance edge I now experience with the 'Stones is a big advantage vis-a-vis the speedometer error realized.
