Good timing for a lecture on crankcase dilution

When you see this water dripping out of your exhaust, think about what's happening inside your exhaust system if you shut it down without a thorough warm-up. Exhaust systems last much longer when cars aren't subjected to short trips, as when warm the water is dissipated as a gas rather than lingering as a liquid.
What's even more alarming is the effect of undissipated water in your crankcase. Water blends with the sulfur in gasoline to form sulfuric acid deposits. Need I elaborate on these ramifications? This isn't good for much of anything, including cylinder walls, which can actually become pitted in extreme cases. Again, warming the oil to at least 120° (150° is usually recommended) before shut down is a good idea. This may take 10 or 15 miles to accomplish.
In a practical sense, you can't always do this, and modern oil is good about absorbing a lot of these contaminants, to a point. Further, running your car an extra 10 miles to warm it up after every short trip to the drug store is counter-productive, putting additional wear and tear on it.
There is a happy medium somewhere.
