I live in very hilly country with some steep grades that I drive for about 80 Km each weekday. I can eliminate the cruise control possibility. Around here, because of the hills, the cruise is far to laggy. So, when my brakelight switch became defective I had no qualms in using the brake pedal cruise switch position (though not the normally-off switch itself)as a brakelight switch position. This was simple and essentially free in comparison to the expensive saab switch and awkward placement. And, I disconnected the cruise vacuum-line at its pump.
So here's my theory: Since I very much enjoy accelerating up these hills and leaving everyone far behind, it is likely that the combination of climbing-angle and acceleration drives oil into the speedo housing, which is at the rear of the case. This might occur even without overfill.
I'll carefully level the car, remeasure the fluid level, and perhaps modify driving habits. This may be the reason I found the level very low when I did the drainplug mod a couple of months ago. It may also be why saab changed to an electric transducer the very next year.
Thanks fellows, and sorry to be so long winded!
