I bought an auto '87 9000T a little more than five years ago. It too had high mileage, 151,000, but it had the original tranny replaced at 120k. So, I thought things were all good at least until maybe 220k.. Nope, the automatic died on me at 193k. Admittedly, I was pretty hard on it, so I am sure that didn't help.
Beyond lifespan though, the automatic 2.0lT is really a slug. All 2.0l are slugs off the line compared to the 2.3, but the automatic makes it that much worse. However, it does make up some time between shifts as it keeps the boost up more than a manual would. But, it still is nothing like a five speed. I had my car converted to a manual, and though the engine is the same, it felt like I added gobs more power..
And, you will get a few MPG better mileage with the manual on the freeway. Plus, the manual is quieter.
Personally I thought the automatic was still a lot of fun, but I'll admit I was going from a 70 HP manual Honda as my previous car.
Your call, but unless the automatic tranny was JUST replaced, I'd definitely think twice. Also, I've had a lot of parts replaced on my car that are more or less considered 'normal wear' once you get over the mileage of that vehicle. About 180k was when I really started to have quite a few repairs...
