I too worried about the mounting location I eventually decided on, which was to simply replace the ashtray/lighter assembly, but after living with it for a year I can say that it isn't bad. I can make a fleeting glace at all and discern if they are in a normal position. I had thought of twisting all gauges so that a normal position was always at 12 o'clock, like Carroll Shelby did with the original Cobras, but decided against it for cosmetic reasons.
As you have observed, I didn't move the stereo down because of CD player interference with the shifter--and indeed the receiver itself would've been difficult to manage in that position. In 1st, 3rd, or 5th gears the shifter would have to be moved to remove a CD, perhaps to 2nd or 4th, which certainly isn't a prudent maneuver while zipping down the I-10 at 80 mph.
