'91 balance shaft gears and chain

I purchased my '91 9Kt with 60K, replaced the tensioner at 61K and the timing chain failed at 65K. The technician did not replace the balance shaft chain or any of the gears or guides during the repair, only the timing chain itself was replaced (and four bent valves, of course.)
I now have 108K and have been reading with dismay about the high failure rate of the balance shaft gears on 91's (inadequately hardened) and their subsequent chain failures. Even though the chain seems to run quietly these days, am I sitting on a time bomb? I don't want to replace bent valves (or worse), but I don't want to over-react.
Also, I am a reasonably adept DIYer (heater core, ball-joints and bushings, water pump...) but I wonder if the process of replacing both chains & all gears and guides is best left to a dealership or an experienced tech? Have any of you performed this PM task? Should I purchase one of the SAAB shop manuals mentioned by Quasi before tackling the job. Any other issues that I should address while I am "in there?" Any thoughts, suggestions, instructions would be greatly appreciated!
Dan
