It appears that the TCS has two problems. One, most of us enthusiasts consider it an intrusion and is unnecessary. For the most part, skillful drivers know how to do most of what TCS does for us, i.e., let up on the throttle when we experience wheel spin. However, TCS acts like a limited-slip diffential at low speeds up to about 25 mph, only in the manual transmission cars, by braking the front wheel that is sliping. This is good in ice and snow situations. Models equipped with a disable switch can defeat all TCS effects. Some other way of disabling the system can also defeat TCS operation.

The more serious problem is that in all TCS cars, electronics control throttle operation at all times. No, you do not have a direct cable between the accelerator pedal and the throttle valve. Instead, the accelerator pedal makes requests to the computer which in turn commands the throttle action. Therein lies the sometimes fatal problem. When there is a fault in the system, disabled by a switch or not, the system goes into a "limp home" mode where only partial direct throttle control is available. No, I am told that you don't want to drive in this mode very long...excessive pressure on the accelerator pedal is necessary just to maintain traffic speed. Yes, good only for limping home.

Is it that bad? No, even if it can not be disabled, it does not intrude in normal driving situations and may save your skin in unknown situations. A properly maintained system can be absolutely trouble-free. I purchased my 93 Aero in 97 at 98k miles and now have 131k miles and never had a single problem with it. However, others on this bb have had a variety of bad luck events.

Saab actually made this an option in 94-95 9000s and dropped it for 96-98 9000s, but brought it back in 99 on certain 9-5 models.

A rule of thumb is if you have it, maintain it...particularly change brake fluid as scheduled and keep the wiring dry and corrosion-free, and keep the throttle body clean. Remember, defeat measures will only prevent its activation, but will not prevent it from having the dreaded "limp home" problem.
