Has anyone tried an antenna switch?

Late in March, 2000, my wife's Volvo acquired a problem--the power antenna wouldn't go up! I wandered down to the dealer, and asked if this was a known problem, was it likely to be a loose wire, poor ground, bad antenna motor...? One of the techs looked at me and said, "Did you check the switch?" I figured that since it was almost April 1, he was having me on--but it turns out that there is a switch on the dash of V-wagons that turns the aerial off (down only).
I think this was about the only thing on that car I admired as a good idea (our across-the-way neightbor tore the antenna out of her wagon, trying to scoot out of a pouring rain before the garage door was fully up).
Since I listen to CDs while cruising CA freeways, I've thought that having the antenna stay down might help reduce the noise factor. So the question with which this began...
Thanks for any ideas/help!
