Hi Daren.

You can use an open filter. Do you have an old gen. 900, you can place the open K&N filter directly on the airmassmeter. You'll however need to buy two more things from K&N - their "Coolpipe" and "Powerblanket". The you surround the filter with the "blanket", so it's open only upwards against the hood. Now mount the coolpipe so it gets cool air from beneath the spoiler and then up into at matching hole on the blanket.

If you however drive a newer 9000, as Michael mentions, the filterbox is already outside the left side of the enginecompartment. So you'll need to remove the whole assembly, use a short metalpipe and the put the open filter inside there, with the left wheel.

Michael writes: "Those SAAB engineers know about K&N filters, they don't use them for a reason".
Yes, they don't use them for a reason: Costs! And often only real enthusiasts know how to handle these types of filters correctly.

And about silencing systems and noise from open filters: True, if you have a normal aspirating car, you'll get the intake noise out through the filter. This noise is only there on full throttle, during normal accelleration and steady driving, it doesn't give a diff. However, driving a turbo-car, this is barely noticeable, as this noise cannot get past the turbo. It kinda chops the sound into pieces. On my 900 turbo, I had the filter on the airmassmeter and all the extra noise it made, was a little deeper "raaw" when on full throttle.

My advice: Buy an open K&N-filter! It'll give you cooler intake air (if mounted the right way!). It'll save you fuel - personal experience says about 5%.
