The fuel gauge doesn't read the fuel sender directly. The computer in the EDU gets the fuel sender signal, and after some processing, drives the fuel gauge with it.
So it sounds like you've got a loose wire to the EDU. A few questions -
When you say the EDU goes out - do you mean it goes dark? Or does it remain lit up, but the numbers go wacky?
When the EDU comes back, does it come back with a reasonable average fuel mileage, or does it come back with "--.-" for average fuel mileage, and perhaps also come back in metric (kilometers/liters) units?
I ask, because that might help track down the loose wire. If you're losing power to the EDU itself, the display won't be quite right and the fuel gauge won't work. But without checking my electrical manual, I believe the EDU backlight bulbs run off a different supply.
The EDU gets two power supplies - one supply is there all the time, even with the car off. This keeps the EDU memory alive - the memory that remembers what units you want, and what the last mileage was for average fuel economy and miles-to-empty. The other power supply is only on when the ignition is on, and it drives the display and fuel gauge. My guess is that is the wire that's loose - it could be in the connector at the base of the EDU. This would require removing the top of the dashboard and pulling up the instrument cluster - not a lot, but just enough to re-seat the connector. It takes about 20 minutes to remove the top of the dashboard.
