The -005 is the correct number for an '88KT. I've not heard that unit has had problems - I replaced mine with a rebuilt from Sobstory, and the car runs and idles just fine.
As far as I know, there are NO other substitutes. In later years the AMM went to a different ending number - one giveaway is the lack of an adjusting screw, and an all aluminum body. The units ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. The connectors will fit, but the wiring is different - plug in the wrong unit, and you'll damage the AMM, or the ECS, or both.
A good rebuilt -005 should work just fine.
