...I've just been quite busy lately and haven't had as much time to participate on the board as I would like. I'm glad you have found some of my previous posts helpful. Really, everything I've learned about Saabs has come from this board, so I'm more than happy to reciprocate even though I am hardly an expert.
Anyway, did the tach read low while the car was vibrating? And was eveything smooth while you were driving or had the revs up a bit? Was the car cold or at operating temperature? As I'm sure you know, a low idle will cause a vibration (like when you let out the clutch without enough gas.) There's a lot of things that can cause a low or fluctuation idle, like a vacuum leak. I kind of like James' idea of bad gas too. Now, if the car didn't smooth out when the revs were bought up then you might be more concerned. A rough engine at speed could be cause by a misfire or a bunch of other things. It's interested that the car seemed to be vibrating more from the belt side. Thinking back to when I had a low idle, it seems to me that engine will always vibrate more on that side simply because it's anchored more securly to the transmission side. The only rotating item I can think of on that side of the engine that has enough mass to make the whole engine shake would be an out of balance crank pulley, but even then it would have to be severly out of balance and quite visible to the naked eye.
As you can probably tell, I don't really know what is causing you problem, but it's probably something like a low idle or missfire and nothing "dangerous" to your engine. I wouldn't worry about it unless it hapens again though.
Best of luck,
Craig
