It's not a rubber grommet. The mount is a bracket with a long cylidrical hole. Into the mount goes the bushing. The bushing for the engine side is identical to the 'chassis' side - a large diameter metal cylinder with rubber bonded to it, and a small diameter metal cylinder bonded at the center of the rubber.

I have used two methods to remove the old bushing, both work, and neither one requires removing the bracket from the engine. In one case, I used an on-engine press tool made by another fine contributor to this BB. It consisted of a metal cylinder, some large washers, and a threaded rod. The metal cylinder is of such a size that it mates up with the surface of the bracket, but the inside diameter is big enough that the bushing can pass through it. Next, a large washer, big enough to press on the surface of the outer (metal) part of the bushing, but small enough to pass through the inside diameter of the bracket. You put the large washer with the threaded rod through it on one side (wheel well) of the bushing, stick the large cylinder on the other side. The you stick a large metal plate with a hole in it on the other side of the metal cylinder. Stick nuts on the rod, and tighten. Basically, you use the large washer to 'pull' the bushing out.

The other method is decidedly less high tech (less high tech than a screw?). Cut out the rubber inside of the bushing with a hacksaw. Then cut two slots in the outer metal cylinder of the bushing with a saw. I used a jeweler's saw, but a hacksaw would work. Basically, you cut out about a 1/2 inch piece from the outside of the bushing, and pry it out with a screwdriver. You can now easily knock the old bushing out. Yes, you'll probably nick up the inside of the bracket, but smooth it some with a little sandpaper.

I agree with Quasi that the saw method is less desireable. You'll want to put some plastic or cloth down to catch the cuttings (don't want them dropping into the alternator), and you do nick up the mount some. But it does work.

Maybe if you ask politely on the BB for the tool, someone can help.
