Fixed (temporarily) straight-line instability

My '96 Aero (144K miles) has felt rather unstable at speed despite new lower control arm bushes and drop links that have otherwise improved the handling no end. It has also had a tendency to follow ruts in the road. I noticed some time ago some movement in the steering rack when moving the wheel while the car is stationary, and have ordered some poly steering rack bushes. Tonight, however, I thought I would try torquing up the steering rack mounting bolts as described here by others. I noticed that there appeared to be a gap between the rubber bush and the washer under the nut on one side. I tried to torque them to 70Nm (52lbft) according to the Haynes manual, but they were already at least that tight. So I decided to overtighten them, and gave them a really good wrench. They both tightened further.
Since doing this, the car is very stable at speed and has lost just about all of its torque steer. It still follows ruts slightly, but nowhere near as badly. I can't wait to get the new bushes (probably tomorrow). I might get some new nuts and bolts as a precaution, having overtightened the existing ones.
It may be my imagination, but I think the road noise mentioned in my previous posts may have lessened. Wishful thinking, perhaps...
