Brake servicing problem!

Am i being stupid?!
I tried to change the front brake pads on my '94 Aero yesterday, but I have had big difficulty in getting the caliper piston to retract. Eventually - with lump hammer assistance i managed to get it to move far enough to enable me to pull it of the disc (rotor) and get the old pads out. However even with a g-clamp I couldn't move it back in - so there was no chance of getting the new pads in!
Do i need to sisable something like the TCS or ABS while I do this - or has the caliper simply jammed? - I doubt this as the brakes seem to work fine!
How do I get the pistin to retract?!
Thanks in advance for your advice - I not usully this useless!
Dave
