From your description it's not clear, but it sounds like you've got oil seeping from the valve cover gasket. The next stop is the exhaust manifold. It's pretty common for the valve cover gasket to seep oil after a while. It doesn't have to seep much - it's not like you'll see a river of gunk washing down, just a little film on the block that hits the exhaust manifold gasket and seeps in. Clean the area between the valve cover gasket and the exhaust manifold - I use a little alcohol (COLD ENGINE) on some paper towels. Get it nice and clean, so if you wipe a paper towel over it, it comes away clean. Then wait a week, and wipe a paper towel over it. If it comes away oily, you're weeping oil from the valve cover. Replacing the gasket is about an hour's work and $20 in parts for a new gasket and sealant.
