I just had to replace the 2.3 on our '95. The original engine threw a rod creating a 4" hole in the side of the block. My choices from my indy in CA were all about $2500, various miles plus $1000 for a rebuild plus $1100 for R&R.
I choose an engine with only 36k on it and didn't rebuild (although I had to wait 4 weeks to get it from the East coast). If I could have got a used engine for $750 that would have been great, but we couldn't find one that cheap.
