Temp gauge readings

I recently replaced the water pump on my 93 Aero. There was a progressively worsening leak from a seal and inspection of the pump when removed showed enough signs of wear to justify replacement. Since then I have noticed changes in the readings on the temp gauge. Previously, the needle hardly ever went above 9 o'clock, but now, idling in traffic the needle frequently moves much closer to the red zone, until the high speed fan cuts in. My initial thought was that the low speed fan was malfunctioning, but everything seems OK. I took it to my local Saab dealer (excellent, btw) and they confirmed that the cooling/fan system is functioning as it should. Both the low and high speed fans are cutting in at the appropriate temp. My question is this? Why would the temp gauge read higher in traffic now than before? Could it be related to the leak of coolant from the pump seal - system not fully pressurized etc (18 psi if I remember correctly). Any theories anyone?
