Just about anything would be less costly than the ABS unit. Has your mechanic isolated it to the ABS unit based on finding the leak there, or is it just a guess? You can leak fluid from just about anywhere in the system, from the reservoir to the calipers and everything in between. If you're loosing fluid, there should be a visible leak somewhere.
If the fluid is indeed leaking from the ABS unit, then get yourself an expert second opinion. It's worth checking with a (gasp!) dealer. "Somewhere inside" doesn't sound like the best in pinpoint troubleshooting - The dealer may very well have a technical bulletin, or the mechanic Saab trained, to know that it's as simple as a loose fitting.
