I currently have mine off and the worst one of them apart (some of the plastic clips broke, but I'm sure there are enough left to hold it when I put it back together).
I'm going on a 1000 mile round trip starting tomorrow, so I'm not daring to do anything to the car and will do the trip without headlamp wipers (big deal!). However, so far I've found the gears to be well lubricated and the spindle free. I now suspect the brushes inside the motor. Applying 12V to the switched and permanent feeds of this motor produce nothing. It has stopped in a position where the switched and permanent feeds are connected together (i.e. not parked).
I'll investigate further when I get back towards the end of next week. I also bought some cheap wiper blade refills that will do the headlamp wipers about four times each, while costing 1/3 of the price I paid for Saab replacements for my previous car.
Anyway, I'll let you know what I find.
P.S. It *is* possible to do a 1000 mile round trip in the UK.
