As previous posters said the '91 uses R-12. I have a leaky compressoer on my '91 9000S. I still have R-12 Freon in the system, and it still cools a little, but not enough to really be comfortable. I am going to convert to R-134a. Since I still have R-12 in my system it needs to be evacuated by a licensed person. My independent Saab mechanic has the equipment and license to evacuate the system, and he is going to do the job. I have ordered a remanufactured compressor from AirPartsOnline.com, which my mechanic has agreed to install. He will also replace the receiver/dryer and use a conversion kit that includes new R-134a compatible seals. He will flush the system before installing the new parts and refrigerant. He has told me that it won't cool quite as well as R-12, but since it has been on the fritz for a couple of years, I probably won't know the difference. I had the option of sticking with R-12, but decided to make the switch. My car is black, so if it cools it, it should cool any 9000. If you want me to let you know how satisfied I am with the conversion, e-mail me, and I will e-mail you back when the job is completed. Hopefully, I will get the compressor tomorrow, and will get it fixed next week.
