The blower controller in an '88 is a resistor pack. It's usual failure mode is to have the motor run at full blast, not be dead. Was the motor making sick noises before it died? Squeaking, whining, grumbly noises? Or was it working just fine, and the one day stopped?
The motor usually gives fair warning that it's getting ready to die - it'll make sick noises well before it quits. If the system just up and quit, I'd assume there was a problem in the 'controller'. Perhaps something as simple as a broken wire, or a break internal to the controller. The controller is indeed between the ACC unit and the fan. It's just a block bolted to the side of the fan housing, and is accessable without having to remove the fan - you should be able to get to it easily. Follow the motor wires OUT. Try something simple - disconnect the fan motor wires, and connect them directly to the battery. If the fan runs, then you know you need a new controller. If you're somewhat handy with a soldering iron, try opening up the controller and see if it can be fixed. It may be as simple as a bad solder joint or a burned-up resistor.
