Starter Blues... please help! :(

Hey,
I've replaced the starter on my car with a used one. When the car starts up it gives this extra noise. I've pretty much determined it's because the teeth from the starter aren't pulling out from the fly wheel fast enough. So I called the company back and told them that this starter didn't work, they sent another. It too made the noise. So I thought...hmm...maybe the solinoids are bad, so I took the one from the original starter which worked fine if it actually started the car. Tried the used working starter with original solinoid, still makes noise. I can't remember the car ever doing it with the original starter. I have no idea what's going on here. I'm getting desperate becuase I know I'm causing damage to the starter and the fly wheel. There are 3 wires that hook into the back of the starter, right? Two heavy gauge ones, and a small one onto the solinoid. Are there suppose to be 4?? I didn't remember there being 4, but there are a total of 3 plugs, but 2 wires go onto the back with a nut. Please help if you can. I also think maybe it's something with the ignition control or something.
Thanks
