The power connector I installed sits loose in the lower compartment, Which makes it quite accessible, at least for me. It would be possible to install a "fixed" socket at the back of this compartment. The whole thing will pop right out, by the way, making it easy to work on. I have a "multi-headed" socket I can plug in if I need more connectors. I don't think the power draw for the devices you mentioned would be a problem as the resistance heater for the lighter draws quite a bit anyway. The circuit is also fused, of course.
I did not modify the car wireing harness. When you remove the ashtray, you must detatch a connector at the lighter. I just made up a connector to attach to this same point. The lead from the wireing harness is not long enough to reach the lower compartment.
If you buy one of the "multi-headed" power adapters, you can cut off the male socket that is supposed to plug into the lighter outlet and then solder your new wire with the new connector to the female sockets. fish the wire up behind the radio and plug into the wireing harness. Your done.
