Some thoughts...

I think Aaron gave a good hint in mentioning his free flowing exhaust. A very low back pressure exhaust often creates a lift-throttle popping condition, though I am embarrassed to admit I don't know the reason behind this phenomenom. An exhaust leak can also create popping on acceleration. A exhauast manfold gasket blown out somewhere can create a particularly irritating noise. I would start the engine when cold a feel very carefully around the block to manifold, manifold to turbo, and turbo to down pipe connections to see if you feel any puffs of air. Areas around the leak can also be a little blackened.
Your noise could also be detonation which would indeed limit you to base boost. In fact this was the case when I bought my car: the timing was over advanced and the engine would pop and not exceed base boost, so your guess was a good one barring the DI issue. However, if the noise occurs under coating or lift-throttle conditions then detonation seems less likely. There's a way to connect a test LED to the ECU to let you know when the knock sensor is active which might help you rule that out.
Just some idea anyway. Are you still going to the Saab Owners Convention in Florida? It looks like I might be in the area at the time so we could definetly meet up.
