...the felt lining rubbing against the metal edge of the roof opening. Mine did this with a vengeance until I got really pissed off and dealt with it just a month or so ago.
I used some Auto Magic, a preservative for rubber and plastic similar to but thicker than ArmorAll, on the edges where the two surfaces make contact. This did the trick. I've heard that Townsend Imports has used Vasciline, and that should work as well or better--better because it might be more durable. The important thing is to use something that doesn't act to deteriorate the felt lining, like motor oil or chassis grease might do, but lubricates it so that it doesn't grate up against the metal, which is what causes the noise. I think a rubber/plastic preservative--like ArmorAll, Son-of-a-Gun, or silicone spray--would be safe, but I don't know what reaction Vasciline (a petroleum derivative) would have with the materials in the lining. I've used it successfully on the delicate rubber diaphragm material on my Harley's carburetor, so I would think it would work fine for this.
