Clutch stuff revisited.. long Posted by Darrell [Email] (#2525) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Darrell) on Tue, 15 May 2001 17:42:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There were a flurry of previous posts concerning inability to shift gears but still having pedal pressure. I had the same experience and was very puzzled bacause the symptoms did not point to either the slave or master cylinders. My biggest fear was that the tranny had some internal problem that would require rebuild or replacement.
Well, I bit the bullet and tore into the clutch job on Saturday.
The culprit was the clutch disc itself which while having no signs of lining wear, had failed due to the damper spring retaining pins chewing through the retaining slots. The metal separating the slots had shorn off and fallen between the clutch and pressure plate causing the clutch to lock against the flywheel. Looking back, I can recall the vibrations when engaging the clutch from a standstill getting progressively worse. There was also a slight high pitched chatter that I thought was a bad or soon to be bad release bearing.
For those of you out there scratching your heads on the bleeding procedure (like I was) A bicycle pump with a pressure gage works well. I fitted the rubber hose into the lid a small rubbermaid juice container that just happens to screw onto the fluid resevior perfectly (got it at Target).
My 2 cents.
