no start woes--at the risk of appearing stupid

Ok. I'm here again. I had to put the tinkering aside to finish grades this semester. NOw, I can again, and must, turn my attention to getting my 9k to running because I had an accident two weeks ago in my truck and need something to drive whilst the truck is in the shop for 10 days thanks to an inept young woman who shouldn't have been driving. ANYWAY.

I had a classic no start. Plugs new, smelled of gas, new gas filter. Put new distributor in b/c I thought the hall-effect system was bad. Still no start. When the 16 appears in the flywheel window, my rotor is 180 degrees from the slot in the rebuilt distributor. The distributor will only go in one way b/c of the off-center slots. Now what? I have good spark from the coil (I pulled it off to check), so it's not the ignition amp, right? Any thoughts? I have a Monday night deadline and lots to do before then! Thanks. I really like this car, and want to get to know it better.
