I'm starting a new thread in response to a thread below on this subject, and specifically a post by Darrell with some good ideas that we need to exploit. This has been a thorn in our side since I started reading this board, about two years ago, so here are some thoughts:
Frustrated with attempts to purge his fluid, Quasi recommends taking the car to the dealer, which is something I'd rather not do since the nearest dealer is 70 miles away for me. In the past, others have recommended a bicycle inner tube clamped to the reservoir lid. A good concept, I think there is a chance for damaging the threads on the reservoir using a clamp in this fashion, however, so here are some other ideas.
I think Darrell is on the right track here with the juice-container lid (see thread below this on clutch bleeding). I need to purge my clutch fluid, so a specific procedure including part numbers and supplier sources is needed here for everyone to follow. Darrell mentioned a juice-container lid he purchased from Target, and though we don't have one here (a huge one is being built), I'll go to Walmart and try to find a similar lid to use and report back with specifics. Of course, every Walmart will likely not have the same part.
I'm not sure, though, if all 9K's use the same size and thread for the reservoir lid, but I can report back what fits my '95. Mine is roughly
1 7/8" in diameter, so does anyone have a lid that varies from this? I'm just thinking out loud here, so bear with me.
Now, once the lid is located, drilling the hole like Darrell suggested sounds good, but let's go one step further and make a permanent lid for clutch fluid purging. For me, the easiest way to do this would be to install a tubeless tire valve, if that's possible in the space available, drilling the large hole and sealing around it with silicone glue. Once that's done, we could use our air compressors regulated to about 10 psi. I think a stock valve for a Harley-Davidson tubeless alloy wheel would work, as I have one here and it looks small enough for use in this context. Again, once I get this fabricated I'll provide all part numbers.
Any thoughts or recommendations so far before I get started? I think once this formula is established, clutch purging will be an easy task.
