The only way the engine control computer (fuel injection computer) can notify the owner that something is wrong is via the 'check engine' light. Just one light, so many possiblities. The computer is always checking sensors. Computers work on absolutes, so some value of the sensor will be 'good' and another will be 'bad'. If the sensor is hanging around that value, sometimes you'll get the check engine light. The engine control computer has the ability to adapt minor problems in the engine, so a sensor can go out and you won't feel any difference in the way the engine performs.
Your best bet is to bring the car to a dealer and have him read out the error codes. That will tell him (and you) what's wrong, and then you can decide what needs to be done next. It might very well be something very minor.
