The sensor for both the manual and automatic are on the top of the transmission, very near the firewall, and closer to the engine side of the tranny. Look for a stubby metal cylinder coming straight up out of the tranny with a wire cable. Peer straight down the firewall to the engine side of the brake master cylinder. It's not easy to see, but bear with it.
It may be the connector, but I've had problems with the sensor. The sensor is press fit into a threaded ring in the tranny, and I've seen the sensor work its way out some. This shows up as a jerky speedo. It eventually gets worse until the sensor pops out, and then the speedo goes dead.
If the wires look OK, make sure the sensor is seated down properly.
