I had a similar "no start when hot" problem. I'm not sure if my solenoid clicked, but eventually it would start. They need quite a bit of current, especially when hot.
I installed a relay to work the solenoid. The wire going to the starter, now operates the relay that gets its power directly from the battery. I have not had a problem since.
