First the idle. Get some fuel injection cleaner (just like carb cleaner, in a spray can), and clean out the throttle body butterfly. Take off the intake hose and spray the cleaner in while moving the throttle plate. Also, remove your Air Mass Meter and clean it out with the same stuff. If these don't help, and you're sure you don't have any vacuum leaks, it may be time for a new AMM. These can be had for about $140 from several TSN sponsors. How's the mileage on your car?
As for the steering rack - can't hurt to have the fluid changed. But more than likely, the ultimate solution will be a new rack. Price on the rack isn't bad - $150 or so, it's the labor that's spendy. Four hours or so..
The temperature gauge sender on your car is on the driver side of the engine, below and slightly behind the distributor. It's a little metal disc that a female 0.25" connector pushes onto. This has come off on my car, and also the insulation around the wire disintegrated (common problem for 1987). You may need to put some heat shrink on the wire and crimp on a new connector. Crush the end a little so that it's a nice tight fit onto the temperature sender.
Good luck!
