If any wiring harness would draw down a system you would be meeting new people: Firemen and Tow Truck operators. There are fuses which will overheat and open to prevent excessive current flow. I think they saw you coming and you looked to be an easy mark.
Battery possibility: High probability, testing will tell batt. or alt. .
Cleaning with wire brush and Arm and Hammer soda / hot water to neutralize the acid on the cable ends and then flush with H2O, dry with shop air blast, reclamp back on, and coat with battery terminal coating spray or grease. The battery is a worthwhile item to have under 4 years old. Just like thermostats under 2yrs. and dates over 18.
Good luck
