Well, if you are going to tackle this yourself, the obvious candidates are plugs, cap, rotor and wires first. Actually, the very first thing to check is that a vacuum hose has not come loose. Especially if there was a sudden onset of the symptoms. Then try cleaning out the throttle housing and possibly adjusting throttle position sensor. There's a page on the Townsend Import site which describes setting basic throttle on cars with the gold AIC valve that explains how to do this. After that really start looking at the vacuum hoses. Could also be a clogged fuel filter, though you might get some stalling with that.
If none of those things solves the problem, then it's time to start think about things like the Air Mass Meter (AMM) and the Crankshaft Position Sensor, etc. But you can do that other stuff pretty cheaply and without bruising too many knuckles, so I would start with that.
