If your unit is dying you probably have a shaft seal leak or some fitting o rings defective and should be replaced before putting a bunch into a conversion. While it is still functioning have it leak checked and repair at time of converion. But if you insist DIY kits are available be sure to get a good one. Remove all the old oil (Sometimes this entails removal of the compressor to completely drain) and install the ester based oil. It is against the law to release R-12 into the atmosphere, so best to have the system drawn down and dried. I really would recommend you have this job done by a shop. Some shops will try to sell you a new dryer as part of the kit really not absolutely necessary but it does make for a better job if your car is very old. It is a must if your compressor is defective or the system has been out of gas for a long tme.
