length at the throw out bearing. The dimension is given but i'll be darned how one really gets a measurement. I guess a calibrated eyeball is all I use and a good strong light. I have tried various rods and sticks. It is sort of you know when it is good when you see it. As the The clutch wears the distance beween the body and the dust shield on the throwout bearing decreases. a new clutch will be about 1/4 inch clearance a worn clutch will be about 0 to 1/32 inch. A car with average care and mixed city/road driving and say 100,000 miles may have between 1/16 and 1/8 inch clearance. I had one lady with 150,000 miles, who was a manufacturers rep and on the road all the time , who wanted me to change her clutch because some one had told her it was time. When I checked it she still had 3/16 inch-barely worn. We finally changed it at 275,000 miles when the pressure plate failed - disc was still good.
