1990 CD 2.0L turbo
I finally got the thing out. I noticed three things.
1. The alternator was very oily (or something). There was a solid cover of black goop all over the alternator including on the back with the wires and diodes and regulators. It might be power steering fluid as I know I've had a leak, but I thought it was just coming from a loose hose clamp on the reservoir. That may be so, but there's quite a bit of stuff on it, but maybe it dripped down the length of the hose and fell on the alternator over time. Any way to check the power steering pump for faults while I have the belts off, etc? Anyplace to look for oil leaks in that area?
2. The brushes are worn unevenly. One brush is about 9 mm the other is about 3.5 mm. Is it normal for them to wear unevenly?
3. The copper-looking ring that the brushes rub against is scored. You can see and feel the scoring- and it _looks_ like it is essentially worn off in one spot. What causes this to get scored? Normal for a 120K alternator?
In case you haven't been following my story, briefly my symptoms were:
- Alternator light came on while driving
- Voltage meter would drop from normal 13.8 to 12 or below
- Revving the engine would get it to shut off and the meter to go back up
- Eventually the revving started to be less effective
- Ultimately limped the car home 100 mi in 3rd gear to keep RPMs up enough to keep the charge high enough to not stall
I ordered a new alternator, essentially because bother the ring (if thats what its called) and the brushes were gone. I'm fairly confident that this is going to solve my problem. Anyone care to agree or disagree?
Thanks,
bg
