Aeroguy, I diagree with your hypothesis about the fan running at low speed and not providing sufficient cooling. Remember, we are talking about operation at idle because the car is sitting at home or in the shop trying to diagnose a problem. At idle, the low speed fan should be able to remove the engine heat, no ifs, ands, or buts.

In fact, if a cooler thermo switch is used, I am of the opinion that high speed fan operation is unnecessary. I rewired my original 3 wire switch to use a cooler 2 wire switch (using the low speed blue wire and ignoring the high speed blue/white wire) and am pleased with the results. The fan comes on at low speed at the 60% mark and never overshoots, even coming off the highway into traffic.

Why does this work? Because the cooling system has a longer period of time to "work off" the heat coming from the engine, particularly when coming off the highway. It removes the same Btus as the high speed fan would, just over a longer period of time, since it kicks in much sooner than the original OEM thermoswitch.

I have a feeling this is going to be controversial, but I have seen the results, and my '90T is running a lot cooler with the cooler 2 speed thermoswitch. It has never even come close to the 3/4 mark, unlike the (former)OEM arrangement with the 3 wire switch, which hit the 3/4 mark regularly.
