LEDs cost more Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 11 Jun 2001 12:46:38 In Reply to: Re: LEDs as replacement bulbs, Michael Oakes, Mon, 11 Jun 2001 04:34:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
LED's cost a lot more than incandecent bulbs. The price of LEDs have dropped in recent years, but the switches were designed in the mid '80s. High intensity non-red LEDs were a laboratory oddity back then.
A LED should last 50 or more years, but that doesn't make a lot of sense in a car that lasts 20 years, tops. And frankly, I don't replace window switch bulbs more than about every 6-8 years.
LEDs will fail if they see power reversals or power spikes - something very common in automotive power systems. It's one thing to install power protection circutry in something expensive like an ABS or Engine Control computer, but a lot different than for interior lighting.
