I did precisely that a few years ago, except I did it to a refrigerator system that needed a replacement (from a junkyard) compressor. As a vacuum pump, I used the inlet side of a junked freezer compressor (the same compressor that keeps my junked 60 gallon hot-water tank at 120 psi for tools and inflation). After an overnight evacuate I charged the system by weight. Lasted a few more years. Don't know what sort of vacuum your compressor can achieve. With respect to the atmosphere in the virgin system, I suspect it is N2 rather than O2. If indeed it is oxygen, then I would not pull it through an oily compressor!
In any case, I'm sure some of my Red Green procedures horrify many saabers. Good luck!
