I'm getting a gawdawful screeching/groaning noise from the front left. It decreases with speed, is most noticeable at speeds below 15 mph. This problem showed up several months ago, and here's what I've tried to alleviate the problem:
1.) Did a complete brake job -- rotors and pads all four corners. This was no problem as I needed the brake job anyway. Noise persisted.
2.) Regreased inner driver. Cleaned out old grease and any grit; bearings seemed to function just fine - no noise, roughness or play detected. Noise persisted.
Now for my possibilities list -- tell me what you think:
1.) Bad wheel bearing. But wouldn't the sound resemble more of a rumble or hum, instead of the sort of metallic groaning sound I'm getting? Also, there's no play detectable in the wheel by doing the traditional rocking back and forth motion.
2.) Bad CV joint. But this results in a click-click sound and is usually dependent on turning, isn't it? Anyway, I put new boots and grease on these about 50,000 miles ago, and the boots are still in great condition.
3.) Some brake component making contact that I can't see without removing the caliper. ABS sensor rubbing somewhere? Why then do I not get an ABS light? Brakes function perfectly and the sound does not go away or get worse when the brakes are applied.
4.) Bad bearing in transmission. Most likely the driveshaft bearings, but maybe something in the differential itself? I have not heard of 9000 5 speed transmissions being particularly troublesome, so what would contribute to the development of this noise?
Thanks in advance for your ideas and opinions!
