A good price on a rebuilt tranny is about $2500 installed. You can get a quality rebuilt from Eriksson for about 1800 delivered, and then assume $600 or so for the shop to install it. That comes with a 12 month 12K mile warrantee. Call them for details, I haven't priced them recently.
Many shops won't touch the ZF because it is hard to work on. Actually, it's easy to work on, just hard to get right. For the $1800 they're quoting to do partial work, I'd go for a rebuilt unit, and get a guarantee.
Unless the shop does A LOT of ZF's, I'd go with Eriksson. Eriksson does a lot, and I understand they dyno test the trannies. I worked with one shop that tried rebuilding my tranny and it took them about three tries to get it right.
The first question that comes to mind, what's wrong with the tranny? What are the symptoms? How confident are you that they've properly diagnosed the problem? Finding this out can be tough, because not a lot of places do ZF's. But there are many problems, like hard shifts, slipping, and early/late shifting that can be fixed relatively cheaply - from about $100 to $150 for new valve body springs, to about $350 or so for new govenor seals.
